Abstract

The response of a standard long counter to neutrons incident into its front face relative to its response to those incident into its side was measured for a range of neutron energies, and an increasing sensitivity to higher-energy neutrons incident into the side was evident. The effect of a shadow bar in contributing to an initial degradation in energy of neutrons which then scatter from the surroundings into the counter was suggested by the response of the counter in the side-on orientation as a function of the separation distance of the bar from a source.
