Abstract
The short-range component of SERS is investigated using a new probe molecule, thiourea. Through a study of the characteristics of thiourea adsorbed on a silver electrode we conclude that resonant surface complexes are not a universal requirement for large enhancement. We further show that the applied voltage definitely influences the enhancement for individual thiourea molecules.
