Abstract

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on needless weld repairs on every major ship built in the United States. This results from the use of irrational weld acceptance standards whose source can be traced to the conviction, developed among shipbuilders and operating agencies during World War II, that all welds must be completely sound. Forty years of research have demonstrated that adherence to traditional workmanship standards costs vast sums and contributes little to real quality. It is possible to develop fitness-for-purpose standards, based on principles of fracture mechanics, which will improve quality and reduce cost at the same time.
