Abstract

The no-core shell model and the effective interaction Vlow k can both be derived using the Lee-Suzuki projection operatorformalism. The main difference between the two is the choice of basisstates that define the model space. The effective interactionVlow k can also be derived using the renormalizationgroup. That renormalization group derivation can be extended in astraightforward manner to also include the no-core shell model. In thenuclear matter limit the no-core shell model effective interaction inthe two-body approximation reduces identically to Vlow k. The same considerations apply to the Bloch-Horowitz version ofthe shell model and the renormalization group treatment of two-bodyscattering by Birse, McGovern and Richardson.
