Abstract

In his memoir about arriving in Shanghai in 1924 to undertake labor movement work, Comrade Li Lisan said that the biggest problem was the gangs. During his first endeavor at agitation among the workers, he had ignored the Green Gang. As a result, the employers brought in the Green Gang, and the struggle in the Rihua cotton mill in the Pudong District was squashed. During the second round of labor agitation, Li Qihan joined the Green Gang, but he overly trusted them and was betrayed, so again the movement was frustrated. Comrade Li Lisan then studied the history of the Shanghai labor movement. He drew on his experience in dealing with the Red Gang in the Anyuan coal mines and acted accordingly in dealing with the Green Gang. As a result, during the May 30 Movement, it was followers of the Green Gang who protected him.
