Abstract
The focus of this article is embodied gender identity and adolescence in the light of memory work narratives. The results suggest that the gender construction in the narratives centres on the defining power of the ''male gaze'' and the different meanings given to sexiness in various contexts. Avoidance and denial are the main attitudes towards sexuality in middle-class home environments, and it is argued that they leave young women without a positive frame in which to interpret their embodied selves. They also create boundaries among different groups of women along class lines.
