Abstract

Abstract The God of the Hebrew Bible is a prime, although elusive candidate for political analysis. God is described as actively involved with the domestic and international problems of Israelites and their regimes. Yet the concept of God carries a great deal of intellectual and spiritual baggage, and the biblical text attributes to God numerous and contradictory traits. It is not possible to provide a convincing answer to the ultimate question of whether God was creator or created. However, the multiple facets of God's nature that appear in the Hebrew Bible suggest that the record was shaped by biblical authors and editors for their own purposes.
