Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the pre-war reversal of alliances, culminating in the ‘Diplomatic Revolution’, the outbreak of hostilities in Europe and overseas, as well as the ensuing strategic, fiscal, and political dimensions of global conflict. Congruent with the Handbook’s key guiding precepts of granularity and modernity, the chapter also aims to illuminate the spatial dimensions of the Seven Years’ War, evolving within a transformative matrix blending human decision-making with key structural features of the international system including size, power distribution, alliance patterns, issues of territory, and dynastic rivalries among others. It further integrates the novel perspectives of international history, conflict research and world system analysis that encourage rethinking of the approaches to war generally.
