Abstract
Abstract This essay seeks to explain why in his Commentary on the Twelve Prophets Theodore of Mopsuestia incorrectly attributes the Exile of the Northern Kingdom of Israel to Sennacherib. It is argued that theological and typological interpretations of Sennacherib developed in the Second Temple period that resulted in the portrayal of him as the paradigmatic Assyrian enemy. This development created an exegetical tradition that Sennacherib exiled the Northern Kingdom of Israel. This tradition can be found in both Christian and Jewish sources of late antiquity.
