Abstract

In this paper we report the derivation of an energy level 1 scheme of the Sm monochalcogenides using a thermochemical process. This model explains differences and analogies with the Eu chalcogenides. The optical constants of semiconducting SmS monocrystals have been measured for wavelengths up to 40μ. We conclude that the intrinsic absorption edge is at about 0.06 eV. The Sm chalcogenides show a pressure induced semiconductor-metal transition. For SmS single crystals we have observed the optical reflectivity of the metal phase for photon energies between 0.03 and 6eV. The coupled mode plasma resonance is at 2.3 eV. It is concluded that in SmS the semiconductor- metal transformation is due to a pressure induced Sm 2+ → Sm 3+ transition and is intrinsic in nature.
