Abstract

Abstract The Navajo verb poses problems for semantic analysis that do not arise with simpler verb forms. The verb base of Navajo contains several types of morpheme: there are verb roots expressed in different stems sets, classifiers, the matic prefixes, and derivational prefixes. It is difficult to identify the roles played by each morpheme, because there are many interacting factors. Semantic analyses of the Navajo verb have tended to treat morphemes of the same morphological and positional classes as similar; but they are not necessarily the same semantically.
