Abstract

Abstract Toqabaqita is an Oceanic language spoken on the island of Malaita in the Solomon Islands. Ethnologue, where the name of the language appears as To’abaita, gives the number of speakers as 12,572 in 1999 (Gordon 2005). Toqabaqita is a nominative-accusative language, almost exclusively head marking. The basic constituent orders in verbal clauses are shown in (1). ‘V-complex’ stands for ‘verb complex’ (see further below). The O element designates lexical (not pronominal) noun phrases.
