Abstract

Novel cellulose hydrogel with the chiral nematic structure was prepared based on the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]+Cl−) as solvent, and the iridescent cellulose aerogel with the chiral nematic structure were prepared through freeze-drying of cellulose hydrogel. Synchrotron X-ray radiation (SAXS and WAXS), polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe the structures and the formation processes of gel, and the formation mechanism of cellulose gel and chiral nematic structure were deduced, thus establishing the model of the hydrogel formation.
