Abstract

This paper presents the methods used in the analysis and design of four large Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage tanks, two in Greece and two in Trinidad. Both sites were located in areas of high seismicity and this presented particular problems in the analysis and design of the tanks. In Greece the need for a high level of structural integrity and very low risk associated with potential failure resulted in the use of Friction Pendulum System (FPS) base isolators. In Trinidad ground conditions meant that a solution catering for the effects of liquefaction had to be developed.
