The Security Environment of the Asia Pacific Region at the beginning of the 21st Century and Japan's New Security Strategy

Abstract

Abstract : After the end of the Cold War, a great number of changes occurred in the Asia Pacific region, not only politically and economically, but also within the security environment. In some ways, the end of the Cold War has not been as kind to the Asia Pacific region as it was to most of Europe. However, it is obviously moving towards a new dimension. For Japan's security strategy to cope with those changes, long range planning and more drastic changes are needed. This paper will evaluate strategic changes in the coming new century and to discuss effective measures to facilitate the peace and stability stressing the significance of the Japan-U.S. security relationship, and a possible security framework for the region. Finally, I will discuss Japan's new security strategy, its basic concepts and the role of the Japan's Self Defense Forces.
