Abstract

The relationship between the rate of secretion of the submandibular gland and a number of somatic variables has been examined for stimulation with citric acid and intravenously administered acetyl-beta-methylcholineiodide (Betacholyl®). The results show that functional tests performed with this agent do not give results comparable with those of a gustatory test, and that it should not be used for a clinical examination of the secretory capacity of salivary glands. The difference may be ascribed to large individual dissimilarities in the reaction to the general stimulating agent.
