Abstract

ABSTRACT This study summarizes information on exudates and secretions of botanical species used for the treatment of different human afflictions in communities of the Yucatan peninsula region. From the 274 species of Yucatan flora listed as medicinals, only the exudates and secretions of 48 species are used to cure human afflictions. Of these species, a high percentage are used to cure skin infections, a fact consistent with the kinds of injuries caused by thorny plants of the local, low-caducifolius, forest vegetation where the Mayans farm.
