Abstract

The martyrology compiled by Usuardus was finished in 865, but he improved his text until his dead in 877 as can be seen from the socalled autograph manuscript in the Bibl. Nat. ms. 13745 in Paris. This second recension is very rare. However manuscript studies have shown that it was widespread in England. The earliest manuscript is CCCC ms. 57 from the abbey of Abingdon which must have been copied in the 970's as a product of the monastic movement in England in the 10th century. The exemplar was probably a manuscript from St. Peter's (Blandinum) at Ghent in Belgium. In the 11th century the first recension came to England, and this recension as well as the second recension were copied during the centuries. From England the second recension even crossed the North Sea to Denmark.
