Abstract

The first national land use survey coincided with the nadir of the great interwar depression. This has enhanced its interest as a historical document, but shortened its life as a current geographical reference source. As it has become progressively out of date, it has engendered an appetite for a similar, but modern source which would provide a record of the more prosperous face of this country, and it was to meet this growing need that the second land use survey was inaugurated in 1960. The purpose and procedure of the new survey have been fully explained in a special handbook1 prepared for the guidance of field surveyors and will be briefly recapitulated here.
