Abstract

A study was made of the fluctuations of larval populations on paddochs grazed by lambs carrying mono-specific infections of O. circumcincta, H. contortus, T. axei and Y. colubriformis. Larvae of O. circumcincta appeared first on the herbage followed much later by those of the 2 species of trichostrongylus while H. contortus was intermediate. Larvae of O. circumcincta persisted in the greatest numbers for the longest time and the larvae of H. contortus were observed almost to die out during the winter. It is suggested that these fluctuations in larval populations arc responsible for the seasonal succession of species observed in lambs in the field.
