Abstract
Defense spending, an aging population, a slowing economy, global warming, energy needs, and government policy—all are factors concerning prospective returns in the U.S. bond market in the coming years. Economic cycles are likely to see rising interest rates and a continuing slowdown in the U.S. economy in the near term. Portfolio managers should thus look to preserve capital in the face of what is likely to be a challenging interest rate environment.
