Abstract
It is impossible for one single person to have an overview of this staggering plurality. It is not dependent on one single source, but can assemble from several texts the knowledge about Jesus which was preserved in the early Christian communities. Finally, there is the claim that it is impossible to apply criteria of authenticity to get back to the historical Jesus, since these are based on an understanding of history which needs to be revised: to go behind the texts to investigate historical reality is an illusion. When one dispenses with criteria, however, all one can do is to postulate historical recollection without making any differentiations, since one no longer has any means of distinguishing between good recollection, literary fiction, or false recollection. Keywords:Christian communities; historical Jesus; historical reality; historical recollection; special profile
