Abstract

This paper presents early results in one hospital from the Standardised Audit of Hip Fractures in Europe, otherwise known as the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit. The structure of this audit allows centres to participate and then withdraw when they desire, this has resulted in a fluctuation of contributing centres. The unit described in the study joined the audit on 1st January 1999. The data here are from its first 20 months. Information has been obtained from the acute stay of 392 patients and a 4-month follow-up of 295 patients. Although the results presented are small in comparison with other larger centres, it is evident that many important and interesting points can be highlighted to improve care for our patients. This tool allows units to audit the care given to orthopaedic patients.
