Abstract

This chapter introduces you to the disciplines of sociology and social policy, indicating their particular areas of concern and explaining important concepts and specialist language. It reviews how different traditions in sociology and social policy have explained health and illness and considers how these insights can be of value to health workers. It highlights some important distinctions between sociological theories and methods of enquiry, in particular between approaches which are more abstract and ‘scientific’ and those which stress the importance of studying people as subjects rather than as objects.
