Abstract

Calculations have been made of the scattering of neutrons in hydrogen, which are relevant to the determination of the slow neutron spectrum in a moderator. The total cross-section, the mean asymmetry of scattering and the mean energy loss per collision are given as functions of the neutron energy and temperature for both ortho- and para-hydrogen gases. Formulae and graphs have been derived from calculations performed at the Academy of Sciences Computing Centre. The energy region considered is above the temperature of the gas, so that the thermal motion of the molecules can be neglected. Allowance is made for zero-point oscillations of the nuclei and for the excitation of rotational levels.
