Abstract

Low energy ion scattering of inert gas or alkali ions have been widely used to study the structure and composition of solid surfaces and to provide unique insight into the materials science of surfaces and of near surface layers. Hydrogen beams have rarely been used for such studies, yet proton beams have many advantages for such studies. In this paper we will review the scattering of low energy hydrogen beams from single crystal surfaces, leading towards an evaluation of their potential for surface analysis.
