Abstract

T he General Medical Council (GMC) has recently published a report on GP prescribing, which received very wide media attention. According to the report, 1 in 20 prescription items were found to have had some sort of mistake, affecting 1 in 8 patients. The report will be of particular interest to practice nurses who work in GP surgeries. As the report states (Avery et al, 2012), over 900 million items are dispensed in the community in England each year, and mistakes do happen in the prescription of these medicines—in primary care, reported prescribing error rates vary from less than 1% to over 40%.The report states:
