Abstract

Founded in 1889 as an ‘asylum for epileptics’ (‘Anstalt für Epileptische’), the Saxon Epilepsy Center Kleinwachau is located in the most easterly German state (Saxony), close to Radeberg and to the baroque city of Dresden. Kleinwachau is a member of the protestant welfare organization, Diakonie Germany. Its core facilities include a sheltered workshop with working opportunities and specialized training workshops for disabled people, a special school for handicapped pupils, a residential care home for people with disabilities, and a neurological department. Recent additions to its operations include an information-and-advisory center, a multidisciplinary medical care center, and an integration company as a regional operating service provider (Fig. 1).
