The Saudi Dental Journal’s mission for the Saudi Dental Society

Abstract

The Saudi Dental Society (SDS) is a community of dental professionals whose mission is to diffuse awareness of and interest in dentistry, promote scientific research in the fields of dentistry and establish a closer relationship amongst its members locally and internationally. These are the missions I plan to achieve in my service as the Society’s current President for which I am honored and count as a privilege. The Saudi Dental Journal was established to serve as the official publication of the Saudi Dental Society to achieve the Society’s purpose in promoting scientific research by means of publishing scientific articles in a journal. To fully serve the almost 2500 current active SDS members, the Society has given its extensive support to the Saudi Dental Journal to help achieve its objective. The Saudi Dental Journal is accessible online free of charge, a benefit offered to all its members. After facing challenges and identifying expectations, the Saudi Dental Journal under the new editorship of Prof. Khalid Al-Wazzan made extensive efforts to conduct a benchmark exercise to obtain its strategic objectives and to ensure the Journal becomes an internationally recognized journal. The Saudi Dental Journal has experienced unprecedented development and transformation as it accelerates its ambition to be of international standard. To start with, the Journal is now officially published by King Saud University Academic Press and Elsevier B.V. who also provided the online editorial system. The Journal had achieved substantial results towards fulfillment of its major objectives. From the time it commenced its submission and review process online through Elsevier Editorial System, the number of submitted manuscript for publication escalated to almost a hundred percent in just several months. The duration from submission to decision process was significantly reduced. The quality of submitted articles has also improved. The Saudi Dental Journal is continually making efforts to improve its standard and is currently pursuing its mission to apply to the ISI Web of Knowledge and Medline. Colleagues and members of the Society can openly support the Journal by publishing upcoming quality research manuscripts as well as cite recently published articles from the Saudi Dental Journal.
