Abstract

The San Antonio heart study research information system was developed to support multiple long-term projects for epidemiological study of heart disease and diabetes in the Mexican-American population. State-of-the-art technology was adopted, including a client-server, a time-sharing local area network, a relational database, the structural query language (SQL), and a fourth generation programming language (4GL), to enable the system to provide a computing platform for multiuser access, a centralized database with data integrity, and transparent information retrieval for data analysis. With 257 application programs in place and 345.5 Mbyte of research data collected, the system has demonstrated its good performance and high adaptability to the dynamics of multiple heart disease and diabetes research projects. >
