Abstract
From studies on the salivary glands of some ixodid ticks (see Till 1961, Chinery 1963, 1965, 1970) it is evident that they differ histologically from the salivary glands of Argas persicus. In view of the difference in the feeding behaviour and the rate of engorgement of blood between most genera of argasid and ixodid ticks, the present study was undertaken to investigate what differences might exist histochemically between the alveoli of the salivary glands of ixodid and argasid ticks and also the possibility that this might elucidate further the functions in ixodid ticks of the other types of cells and alveoli which so far are not clear.
