The article assesses the motivations and implications of the acquisition of the British Council's International English Language Testing System (IELTS) operations in India by the International Development Programme (IDP). Topics discussed include change in the global language testing market, financial challenges experienced by the British Council since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and IDP's monopoly on IELTS testing in India.
