Abstract

This chapter discusses about the safety-bag expert system in the electronic railway interlocking system ELEKTRA. An electronic railway interlocking system has to conform to the high standards of safety and reliability of existing electromechanical interlocking systems. The Safety-Bag is an integral part of the electronic interlocking system ELEKTRA, which has been operational in the railway station of Neumarkt–Kallham in Austria since December 1989. The Austrian Railway Authority has stated that more electronic interlocking systems will be purchased because of their advantages in building and operating costs. It shows that real-time expert systems can be successfully built and integrated into a complex real-time system operating under stringent safety and reliability requirements.
