Abstract

An account is given of the background, purpose, scope and procedures of the Pesticides Safety Precautions Scheme and the Agricultural Chemicals Approval Scheme. Both Schemes are voluntary and depend on close collaboration between government and industry for effective operation. The aim in the United Kingdom is to give users a simple code of practice which, if followed, will minimise the risks to operators, consumers of treated crops and to others, including livestock and wildlife. Official recommendations covering the safe use of pesticides are published.
