Abstract

The composition and size of the urban family at various stages in the development of the town are of great interest to ethnographers, demographers, and historians. Investigation of this problem bears upon determination of the total urban population as well as identification of the structure of the family, study of family life, and many questions pertaining to the material and urban culture of townsfolk. It is not without reason that scholars have studied the family (including the urban family) in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. (1)
