Abstract

Five cases of strikingly similar unrelated children with growth deficiency of prenatal onset are reported. All had relatively large heads, triangular facies, and small slender bodies. All 5 children had a tendency to increased sweating of an unusual degree; 2 of them had hypoglycemia following short periods of fasting. These children are similar to cases described by Silver and Russell; however, since our patients manifest no asymmetry they most closely resemble the patients of Russell. The Russell-Silver syndrome without asymmetry is a distinct entity that can be diagnosed with assurance in early infancy. Early recognition is important in order to prevent unnecessary diagnostic procedures. Mental development is usually normal. The possibility of hypoglycemia in early childhood is an important additional reason for early diagnosis.
