Abstract

Judge Charles Holley ruled that the original guilty verdicts of Pitts and Lee be vacated on the grounds of suppression of evidence by the State. On the grounds of counsel incompetence and coerced confessions, however, Judge Holley ruled against them. Again, newspapers on both sides of the state—the Miami Herald and Panama City News Herald—issued editorials on the case, which demonstrated wildly different opinions about the men’s innocence. The State appealed Holley’s ruling. Robert Shevin, attorney general for the state of Florida, filed a pleading arguing for Pitts and Lee to receive a new trial. The Florida Supreme Court accepted Shevin’s motion and ordered a new trial.
