Abstract

Summary A Rb/Sr age of 445 ± 15 m.y. has been determined for the Threlkeld Microgranite, which is thus the oldest dated intrusion in the Lake District. In Bramcrag Quarry, the microgranite is intruded into the basal sediments of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. It is thought to have been emplaced at the base of the volcanic pile towards the end of Borrowdale volcanism in earliest Caradoc times.
