Abstract

The rotational spectrum of (CH 3) 3P⋯HCN has been observed in its vibrational ground state using the method of pulsed-nozzle, Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy. Values of several spectroscopic constants have been determined for the symmetric top species (CH 3) 3P⋯HC 14N and (CH 3) 3P⋯HC 15N as follows: Isotopic species B o(MHz) D J (kHz) D JK (kHz) x oo(MHz) (CH 3) 3P⋯HC 14N 888.2080(2) 0.416(2) 36.98(1) −4.44(1) (CH 3) 3P⋯HC 15N 862.0818(1) 0.392(1) 35.368(7) − The B o values lead to r o(P⋯C) = 3.756 A and an interpretation of the constant D J leads to the intermolecular stretching force constant k o = 7.28 Nm −1. A comparison of the properties of the species X 3P⋯HCN where X = H and CH 3 is presented. It is concluded that the results can be understood without invoking significant partial proton transfer, even in the case X = CH 3.
