Abstract
This article identifies the roots of Singapore’s pragmatic foreign policy in the country’s pre ‑independence history. From 1819 to 1965, a specific set of events determined the way that the population now perceives the position of the island in the world. Security and the international economic policies are at the core of Singapore’s pragmatism and will be the main focus of this paper.
