Abstract

From the gospel of Mark, we turn to the other Synoptics, Matthew and Luke. From Rome, the context for Mark, we move into the East, where we have seen that the Romans were in control and where Roman Christianity was establishing a firm hold. Matthew's gospel was written in the East, in a situation where the Jesus-community had separated from the Jews and where it was uneasy with the secular society. Antioch would be a plausible solution. The gospel was an amalgam of the Gospel of Mark and Jesus-Sayings taken from the early Jesus-Tradition. This material is used to describe the life-passage of Jesus, the New Moses. The Gospel of Luke was also written in the Jewish Diaspora, possibly in the area evangelised by Paul. It set out to prove that Roman Christianity was dependent on earlier events in the story of Israel and in the life of Jesus. Jesus is depicted as the Prophet-Messiah.
