Abstract

The paper attempts to show that the rolling wheel is the ultimate achievement in land locomotion and follows as a logical development of the evolutionary progress. Two distinct paths of progress are shown, one being the natural evolutionary line, and the other that arising from man's inventiveness. It is seen that the creativity of man has led to considerable improvement in the efficiency of land locomotion based principally on developments in the wheel. In a sense the suggestion is made that since efficiency of locomotion is a primary boundary condition in the evolutionary progress the effects of Tribology in evolution are well worth further study.
