Abstract

The role of the breast care nurse (BCN) is integral to the care of the patient with breast cancer. The BCN is crucial to all consultations in the outpatient setting pre- and post-operatively for a patient with breast cancer. The first BCN contact with the patient is usually in the clinic after a symptomatic or screening episode has led to a biopsy and/or when a diagnosis is confirmed. They offer psychosocial support and provide additional information after the initial consultation with the breast surgeon. The BCN is seen as a patient advocate, patient educator, care coordinator and clinical expert. The enhanced recovery after surgery nurse would be complementary to the BCN, and be primarily involved in ensuring that peri- and post-operative recommendations are implemented.
