Abstract

Female representation in dental school classes is now as much as 50% or more in many institutions. However, the number of women who enter the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery is still relatively low. A number of explanations have been offered for this situation. However, although considerable bias against women in the specialty might have existed previously, this is certainly not true at present, and women have shown that they can perform oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as men. A more logical explanation relates to the desire of some women to eventually raise a family.
