Abstract

The effect of twins in secondary hardening ultrahigh-strength steel (UHSS) on the precipitation of carbides is unclear. In this study, secondary hardening UHSS Ferrium S53 was studied both before and after an aging treatment. The morphology and distribution of twins and their role during the aging process were analyzed and discussed. The results show that three types of twins are found in the sample before aging, and the twin interfaces become the most favorable nucleation sites for precipitates during aging. The precipitates in Ferrium S53 are M2C carbides that possess the following orientation relationship with the matrix: [2 1 1]M2C//[1 3 5]α and (1 1 1)M2C//(1 2 1)α.
