Abstract

Transparency International (TI), the global coalition against corruption, defines corruption on its website as 'the abuse of entrusted power for private gain'. The 1914 forced amalgamation of the southern and northern protectorates that was driven by British colonialist political and economic interests, as opposed to the concerns or aspirations of the indigenous people, marked the birth of the modern Nigerian state-nation. TI has also been active in this field. It led the way in the internationalization of the American Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, resulting in the OECD Anti-bribery Convention. Consequently, military coups and counter-coups with military dictatorships were the dominant form of government in Nigeria for over 30 years from 1960 on. The political situation in Nigeria was becoming more stable, a new team was in place in the NDDC, and EITI Nigeria was under way.
