Abstract

Safe delivery is one of the most important aspects of primary health care and is an indicator of the quality of health services. In this article, the possibilities of the effective involvement of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in a safe delivery system in rural areas of Bangladesh are explored. It was found that in order to improve the quality of maternal and child health care, the TBA program must be linked to a functioning referral system with sufficient skilled midwives to support them. The training and integration of TBA activities will enable the establishment of an intimate working partnership, as well as personal relationship between community health workers and TBAs. In the same way, the TBA becomes a catalyst for a formation of a relationship between the pregnant women and organized health care. The community will, consequently, be better informed of the facilities in hospitals and the treatment system, and the psychological distance between the community and the hospital is considerably reduced. Thus, with efficient antenatal and postnatal care among TBAs, maternal and infant death will be reduced or even be effaced.
