Abstract

This chapter examines the influence of think tanks on South Korean political discourse pertaining to East Asia. It investigates the hypotheses that (1) think tanks are privileged participants in the public discourse, and (2) that they operate in South Korea as intermediary agents between the scientific community and lawmakers. This study begins with a discussion of the analytical relevance of concepts such as world region, regionalisation, regionalism, and regional identity. In the fields of international relations and globalisation studies, these concepts have become increasingly important in recent years. Next, it thoroughly examines the role think tanks play in shaping the discourse on regionalisation in South Korea. Basing itself on concepts from neo-institutionalism in organisational theory, the chapter develops various hypotheses to guide an empirical analysis of think tank personnel and political decision-makers in South Korea. Keywords:East Asia; political discourse; regionalisation; South Korea; think tank
