Abstract
This paper was originally written as a response to an invitation to contribute a reflective ‘afterword’ to the proceedings of the International Community Theatre Conference held in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka in July 2003. Subsequent events in Sri Lanka—firstly, the worsening political situation in the country; secondly, the havoc wreaked by the 2004 tsunami in many areas, including Batticaloa itself and the surrounding villages—make it unlikely that those proceedings will now see the light of day.
