Abstract
The year 2021 has gone down in the history of international relations and in the history of international law as the year in which mankind took the major step towards prohibiting nuclear weapons as the most dangerous weapon ever invented by human beings. This huge step for the whole of humanity was preceded by 75 years of long discussions, numerous international events that occasioned them and in which almost all the international actors participated. The major success achieved is overshadowed by the ignorance shown by the nuclear powers in the process of drafting, adopting and ratifying of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. In this research we aim to analyse the contribution of the United Nations to control and prohibition of nuclear weapons by highlighting the role of principal bodies in the field, activities that culminated with the adoption on July 7, 2017 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons - the first mandatory instrument of law forcing States to abandon the use of nuclear weapons.
